That Certain Something
Coupa Café Attracts with quality coffees, tasty food and a certain indefinable appeal
Dale Bentson, Palo Alto Weekly
February 13, 2009

“Coupa Café in downtown Palo Alto is one of those places where people instinctively congregate. It has a subconscious communiqué, a subliminal call that beckons customers from all walks of life. For indefinable reasons, it is a place to see and be seen. If other restaurateurs could harness that indefinable quality, they would be a more prosperous lot. Coupa Café, which celebrates its fifth anniversary next month, is generally packed even in off-hours.”

Business 2.0: The Tech’s Big Comeback
by Michael V. Copeland
Nov. 2005

“…Pop into the newest hot spot of the geek set, Coupa Café, just around the corner from 285 Hamilton, and you’ll overhear seed deals getting done over the spiced Venezuelan hot chocolate, along with much excited talk about can’t-miss new business plans. On a recent afternoon, one nervous entrepreneur asks a harried Coupa barista for a description of Netscape founder Marc Andreessen so he won’t miss him when the big guy arrives for a meeting. Sure enough, moments later, a newly buzz-cut Andreessen wades into the caffeine- and Wi-Fi -fueled fray. Murmur’s of “There he is” ripple through the crowd.”

San Francisco Chronicle Magazine:
Bargain Bites
Sept 2005

”By themselves, the Venezuelan coffee and chocolate at Coupa Café are enough to satisfy all sorts of cravings, yet there is also a full-blown breakfast menu, salads, panini and even arepas, traditional Venezuelan cornmeal griddle cakes filled with such items as ham, smoked salmon or cheese. There are many upscale desserts, but even a single Chuao Chocolatier bonbon is intense enough to make the visit memorable.

Study Abroad: Escaping Meyer Library on a Friday Night
The Stanford Daily
Olivia Puerta
April 28, 2006

“Having to study on a Friday night isn’t anybody’s cup of tea…unless you do your weekend cramming at Coupa Cafe! Trading in stark, cold Meyer Library for the cozy, attractive Coupa can transform your attitude toward cracking the books. Nestled in a pillowed enclave next to a fireplace, chai tea in hand, reading Kant becomes more romantic than burdensome. Add a skylight and interesting black and white photography to the mix, and the verdict is settled—Coupa Cafe provides a great atmosphere to catch up with some friends or cozy up to your laptop (yes, there’s free wireless). It beats Meyer any day."

Mountain View Voice
by Jennifer Aquino
2005

“The high-quality, authentic coffee and chocolate are worth the effort. Coupal and his wife have created a truly unusual introduction to Venezuelan culture, coffee and food. Their passion is so great they hope to establish a sister city relationship between Palo Alto and Caracas in the fall.”

CFP: Coupa Café: What Palo Alto has always needed, by Carey Jones
Mar 2004

“Coupa has a style all on its own. Its décor is spectacular, with beautiful high ceilings and a huge central fireplace, combining vivid colors with a welcoming feeling. Coupa does not feel like Palo Alto, it’s more continental than that. Coupa deserves well-dressed poser Europeans lounging on its sidewalk patio, struggling novelists hunched over by its fireplace.”

The Wave Magazine: The Perfect Cup
Nov 2005

“Deep in the Venezuelan mountains, a tiny coffee bean grows in the sun. When it’s mature, the bean is picked by hand and set to rest on a patio, where it’s dried, roasted, bagged, and shipped directly to Palo Alto, California. Here, in the candlelit confines of Coupa Café, the bean becomes a rich, mellow cup of coffee, nestled in the palm of your hand

Where does one go when one craves something that makes one smile the instant it touches one's taste buds? It's a cozy place with well made drinks and tasty food. I love the ambiance there and the location is pretty easy to get to.

When I hear the word cafe, I immediately think of Coupa. The place is the epitome of a cozy coffee shop. The ambiance is awesome and definitely plays homage to its South American roots, along with the quiet background music. Their chai tea lattes are to die for, and their desserts are the perfect treat after a long day. If you're hungry try their mediterranean platter or one of their wraps-- everything I've tried is good. It's a great spot to meet up and chill with friends, people watch from the outside tables, or simply read a good book or study.

The cutest, cleanest, lay back cafe where you can do the laptop thing, nice food items like pastries, sandwiches and the spicy mocha coffee is the bomb. All their espresso mix drink is the hottest you will ever have, guaranteed. This place just makes you in a good mood.

My sister took me to Coupa Cafe for the first time after telling me "You have never tasted a Chai this good."  And she's right, Coupa Cafe's Chai Tea is literally the best hot drink I have ever consumed in my life.  I've had it all the ways it's offered, but my favorite is sugar free with soy milk. I've also eaten there a couple times and everything I've had has been good.  The quiche had just the right consistency of firm yet soft, all the sandwiches I've tried have been fantastic (great bread, lots of veggies), and the arepas are delicious.

I never get tired of this place, and I wish there were more places like this in the bay area.  The coupa experience for me is all about the warm drinks/coffee and the food.  Service is always good, and Wi-Fi is free during the week.  It's also fun to eavesdrop on people doing business meetings or people with interesting conversations here. :)
